Mount Batur Black Lava 4x4 Tour Guide

Updated October 2026 4 min read By Bali Jeep Experience

At the base of Mount Batur lies one of the most astonishing geological wonders in Indonesia: the vast Black Lava fields. Spanning several square kilometers of pitch-black basalt rocks and black volcanic sands, this alien landscape offers an exhilarating off-road playground that feels like driving across the surface of the moon.

🌋 Geological Wonder: The Black Lava field was created during the massive volcanic eruptions of Mount Batur in 1963 and 1974. When the molten basalt lava hardened upon contact with the atmosphere, it formed these sharp, dark rock labyrinths that remain frozen in time today.

Safety & What to Bring

1. Closed-Toe Footwear

The basalt rocks in the lava fields are jagged and sharp. Always wear sneakers or closed-toe outdoor shoes if you plan to step out of the Jeep for photos.

2. Sunglasses & Sun Protection

Unlike the chilly morning sunrise, the daytime Black Lava field gets sunny and warm. Dark rocks absorb heat, so sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are highly recommended.
